Real Madrid player Marco Asensio has been ridiculed on social media after missing a Champions League match because of an infection he reportedly suffered while shaving his legs.
One of the hottest properties in world football, the 21-year-old found himself in a spot of bother ahead of their 3-0 win over reigning Cypriot champions Apoel Nicosia.
Real coach Zinedine Zidane refused to confirm the rumour, but the Frenchman laughed as he told Spanish reporters Asensio “has a pimple on his leg which means he cannot lift his sock”.
Spanish newspaper ABC reported the attacking midfielder’s hair got infected thanks to a razor.
His absence provoked a predictably witty reaction on social media.
Marco Asensio is out of Real Madrid’s team due to an infected pimple after shaving his legs. Never would’ve happened in my day. We waxed.

Former England captain Gary Lineker joked that it would never have happened in his day as “we waxed”.
There were many comparisons with other players of the past who had reacted somewhat differently to injury, such as German legends Bert Trautmann, who completed an FA Cup final with a broken neck and Franz Beckenbauer, who carried on playing a World Cup semi-final with a dislocated shoulder.
It remains to be seen whether Spanish international Asensio recovers from the most modern of footballers’ injuries in time for his side’s next match – against Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday.
