A university student has allegedly shot a police officer dead at a police station in Texas.

Police at Texas Tech University in Lubbock entered a room on campus on Monday evening for a “student welfare check”, said university spokesman Chris Cook.

Mr Cook said they found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia in the room.

The student, named by the university as Hollis Daniels, 19, was taken to a nearby police station.

But Mr Cook said that, while at the station, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot an officer in the head, killing him.

He then fled the scene.

The university was placed in lockdown for a time, urging people on campus to “take shelter in a safe location” but this was lifted around an hour later when the suspect was arrested.
