The number of people missing after deadly mudslides in California has surged to 48.

An earlier estimate put the figure at 17, with another 17 confirmed to have been killed.

Hundreds of searchers are hunting for survivors of the flash flooding and mudslides in Montecito, near Santa Barbara.
