H3N2 Influenza Cases Surge in Kolkata: Doctors Advise Early Caution

Kolkata, July 2025— Hospitals and clinics across Kolkata are witnessing a steady rise in H3N2 influenza infections, raising concern among health professionals. This seasonal flu variant is affecting people of all age groups, with the elderly and children being the most vulnerable.

Doctors report that patients are primarily showing symptoms such as

  • Persistent dry cough

  • High fever

  • Sore throat

  • Body ache

  • Weakness lasting over a week

According to local physicians, the H3N2 virus is known for causing prolonged respiratory discomfort compared to other seasonal flu strains. Although most cases remain mild and manageable at home, doctors warn that complications can arise for individuals with asthma, diabetes, or weakened immunity.

"We've seen a sharp uptick in flu-like illnesses in the last 10 days, especially among school-aged children and elderly citizens," said Dr. Ananya Dey, a general physician at a South Kolkata clinic.

With the monsoon setting in, the fluctuating weather and damp conditions are making viral infections more common. The absence of a targeted H3N2 vaccine in India further complicates preventive efforts.
